And When Should You See One?
Many people living in Marbella ask me the same question before their first visit:
“What exactly does an osteopath do?”
Most people assume osteopathy is simply a treatment for back pain. While pain relief is certainly part of it, osteopathy is actually much broader.
With over 25 years of experience in clinical practice, I’ve seen that osteopathy is really about helping the body function better as a whole system — not just treating a painful area.
In fact, one of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to be in pain to see an osteopath. In reality, osteopathic care can also be extremely valuable as a preventive approach to maintaining health and balance in the body.
A Whole-Body Approach to Health
Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy that looks at the body from a holistic perspective.
Instead of focusing only on the place where the pain appears, an osteopath looks for the underlying cause of the problem. The painful area is often just the result of something happening somewhere else in the body.
For example:
- Low back pain may originate from restrictions in the hips or abdominal area
- Headaches may come from tension in the neck or cranial membranes
- Knee pain may be related to restrictions in the pelvis or surrounding fascia
- Digestive discomfort may be linked to stress and nervous system imbalance
The body is deeply interconnected. When tissues lose their natural mobility — whether muscles, fascia, joints, or internal organs — the body begins to compensate. Over time, those compensations can create pain or dysfunction.
The goal of osteopathic treatment is to restore mobility and balance, allowing the body to regulate and heal itself more efficiently.
When Should You See an Osteopath?
There are three common situations where osteopathy can help.
1. When You Have Pain or Physical Symptoms
Many patients come to see me because they are experiencing:
- Low back pain
- Neck pain
- Headaches
- Digestive problems
- Stress-related tension
- Autonomic nervous system dysregulation
These issues are often linked to long-standing tension patterns in the body, sometimes caused by stress, posture, previous injuries, or lifestyle habits.
2. When Symptoms Keep Coming Back
Another common situation is when patients say:
“The pain goes away for a few days, but it always comes back.”
This usually means the root cause hasn’t been addressed yet.
Osteopathy focuses on understanding why the body keeps returning to the same dysfunctional pattern, rather than only reducing symptoms temporarily.
3. As a Preventive Treatment
You don’t need to wait until you’re in pain to benefit from osteopathy.
Many patients visit regularly to:
- Maintain mobility and flexibility
- Reduce tension caused by stress
- Improve posture and body mechanics
- Prevent injuries
- Support overall physical balance
For people with demanding lifestyles, frequent travel, or high stress levels, this preventive approach can make a significant difference.
What Happens During an Osteopathy Session?
A typical appointment lasts about one hour and includes several stages.
1. Medical History and Conversation
We begin by discussing your medical history, including:
- Previous injuries or surgeries
- Lifestyle habits
- When and how the symptoms started
- Any relevant health conditions
This helps create a complete picture of your health.
2. Full Body Assessment
Osteopathy is not limited to a single area of the body.
During the assessment I evaluate:
- Posture and movement patterns
- Joint mobility
- Muscle and fascial tension
- Relationships between different body regions
Often the real source of the problem is not where the pain is felt.
3. Personalised Treatment
Treatment is always adapted to the individual.
Depending on the case, techniques may include:
- Structural techniques for the spine and joints
- Myofascial release
- Cranial osteopathy
- Visceral manipulation
- Autonomic nervous system regulation
- Vagus nerve stimulation
- Therapeutic exercises and ergonomic advice
The aim is to restore balance throughout the body, not simply relieve pain in one place.
What Do Patients Usually Feel After Treatment?
Many patients notice improvements quite quickly.
Common feedback after a session includes:
- Reduced pain or discomfort
- Feeling more relaxed and comfortable in the body
- Better sleep quality
- Improved digestion
- Higher energy levels
Although every case is different, many patients experience significant improvement within two or three sessions.
Real Examples From My Practice
Over the past 25 years of practice, I have seen many interesting cases where the root cause of pain was not obvious at first.
Chronic Back Pain Caused by an Old Scar
One patient had chronic low back pain for years.
During the assessment, I noticed restrictions in the abdomen caused by adhesions from an old C-section scar. These adhesions were affecting the mobility of surrounding tissues and placing tension on the lumbar area.
After treating the scar and surrounding tissues, the pain improved about 80% after the first session and disappeared completely after a few treatments.
Knee Pain Related to Organ Mobility
Another patient came with persistent knee pain that had not improved with previous treatments.
The assessment revealed restricted mobility in the kidney, which can influence fascial connections extending into the lower limb.
After gentle visceral treatment to restore mobility, the knee pain disappeared within 24 hours.
Chronic Headaches and Cranial Tension
A patient suffering from frequent headaches had tension in the dura mater, the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Using cranial osteopathic techniques, the tension was reduced and her headaches improved immediately after the first treatment.
The Role of Lifestyle in Health
One of the most important things I explain to patients is that manual treatment alone is not enough.
Modern life places significant stress on the body, and several lifestyle factors play a crucial role in health:
- Chronic stress
- Sleep quality
- Nutrition
- Proper hydration
- Emotional wellbeing
- Lack or insufficient physical activity
Stress in particular is one of the most significant and underestimated factors affecting our health today, often leading to nervous system imbalance and physical symptoms.
Osteopathic treatment can help regulate the nervous system, but lasting improvement often requires small but meaningful lifestyle adjustments.
Osteopathy as a Partnership
Osteopathy works best when it becomes a collaboration between practitioner and patient.
My role is to help restore balance in the body through manual treatment and clinical assessment. But long-term health also depends on the patient’s commitment to supporting their body through healthier habits and movement.
When both aspects work together, the results can be remarkable.
